They are engaged in a technological race that has the potential to change the world.

    Many of them are headed toward artificial superintelligence, a concept that used to sound like science fiction but is now firmly rooted in Big Tech strategy.

    The term “superintelligence” describes a hypothetical artificial intelligence system that is able to outperform humans in almost all cognitive tasks, including research, creativity, reasoning, and even strategic decision-making. Thousands of specialized chips operate day and night inside those facilities, training machine learning models that get bigger every year.

    It can seem surreal to stroll through one of these structures. Ears ring just from the sound of cooling systems roaring around processor racks. In part as a joke, and in part because the noise is unavoidable, engineers occasionally refer to the loudest clusters as “screamers.”

    There is more to the race for superintelligence than just technological curiosity. In Silicon Valley, there is a deeper belief that the first person to develop the most powerful AI system could have a huge advantage in terms of science, politics, and the economy. Stated differently, the victor might influence the regulations of the upcoming technological era.

    In recent years, billions of dollars have been invested in infrastructure projects and startups by AI companies. By the end of the decade, analysts predict that spending on AI data centers may reach $2.8 trillion. That figure is substantial enough to compete with the economic output of whole nations. However, beneath the optimism lies a sense of unease.

    Even some of the researchers who are developing sophisticated AI models acknowledge that they still don’t fully comprehend the internal workings of these systems. Trillions of parameters make up modern neural networks, which can change in ways that seem almost enigmatic while being trained. They are sometimes referred to as “black boxes” by even seasoned engineers.

    Whether scientists will fully comprehend these systems before they become significantly more powerful is still up in the air.

    Debate within the industry has been triggered by this uncertainty. A growing number of academics and public figures are advising caution as tech companies speed up development. The creation of superintelligent AI should be restricted, or at the very least subject to stricter regulation, according to declarations signed by hundreds of scientists, businesspeople, and legislators.

    Large swaths of the economy could be automated by advanced AI, potentially displacing millions of jobs that previously appeared to be immune to automation. The discussion now includes white-collar occupations like lawyers, programmers, and analysts. However, more potent AI systems could be abused in biological research, disinformation campaigns, or cyberattacks.

    Even some of the companies developing the technology find these possibilities unsettling.

    The fear of falling behind is what makes the race so intense. No significant tech company wants to be the one to slow down while a competitor blazes ahead. Development is advancing at an astonishing rate due to the pressure of competition.

    Talent enters the industry through pipelines from universities like Stanford. Nowadays, research teams led by twentysomething students are working on systems that may have an impact on science and business in the future. Graduate students are frequently seen talking about neural network architectures over coffee on those campuses, occasionally stopping to scribble ideas on whiteboards covered in mathematical symbols.

    Superintelligence is a dream with great potential. AI systems that can solve challenging scientific issues could hasten advances in engineering, medicine, and climate science. Some scientists envision AI assisting in the development of novel materials, the treatment of illnesses, or the discovery of energy technologies that may be difficult for humans to create on their own.

    The balance of power between humans and technology may change in unexpected ways if machines eventually surpass humans in the majority of intellectual tasks. The outcome is uncertain, even optimistic researchers acknowledge. This could be the reason the race seems so urgent.

    For now, the trains continue to arrive in Silicon Valley every morning, transporting engineers to offices that are developing the next generation of artificial intelligence systems. Code flickers on screens. The distant hum of data centers. Large checks are still being written by investors.

    The first signs of something much more potent might already be taking shape somewhere inside those machines. Or maybe not. The race continues because of that uncertainty, which is both exciting and unsettling.
