    Elon Musk’s Starlink Wants to Turn Every Smartphone Into a Satellite Device

    Most people have been in the situation where they should have coverage and then seen that signal bar go away completely. A trail in the mountains, a stretch of highway through the plains, and a village on the coast where the closest cell tower is sixty miles away. That blank signal bar was just the price of going anywhere interesting for most of the last 30 years. It looks like Starlink Mobile has decided that answer is no longer good enough.

    It’s been quiet, but SpaceX‘s satellite internet division has built what it calls the world’s largest and only satellite-to-mobile constellation. With 650 satellites already in low-Earth orbit, the network is already providing voice, data, and messaging services on six continents, including many that haven’t been connected by traditional mobile networks. More than 1.7 billion people will be able to use this system, which is a big number. That’s not a projection far away. Things are already getting ready to start.

    The architecture of Starlink Mobile’s method is what sets it apart from older satellite phone technology. The satellites have phased array antennas on them. These are highly advanced systems that were custom made and work like cell phone towers in space. They use lasers to connect to almost anywhere in the world, and they work with existing LTE networks just like a normal roaming partner would. Any regular smartphone, like the one you have in your pocket, can pick up the signal without any hardware changes. Take a moment to think about that detail.

    The deals between the carriers tell some of the story. There are more than two dozen operators around the world, including T-Mobile in the US, Deutsche Telekom in ten countries, Airtel Africa in fourteen countries, KDDI and SoftBank in Japan, and Kyivstar in Ukraine. More are being added all the time. Most people probably won’t know how big this network really is until they start using it, which they probably won’t even realize. That’s what the goal is. You can switch between terrestrial and satellite service without any problems, without having to open any apps or change any settings.

    Things get bigger with the V2 satellites, which are the next generation. They are made with custom SpaceX silicon and are meant to have twenty times the throughput of the current generation. In real life, this means that the system will be able to handle more than just emergency messages or basic data in a pinch. It will also be able to handle video calls, streaming, podcast playback, and working from home, all on a connection that is the same as 5G. People expect the same level of service from a good urban network, but in places that have never had reliable cell service before.

    The real-world effects on how to handle emergencies can already be seen. In the US, Canada, and Japan, the system sends wireless emergency alerts. More countries are being added all the time. When first responders are working in areas where normal infrastructure has been damaged, like after a wildfire, flood, or heavy snowstorm, they can keep in touch through satellite links instead of hoping that a cell tower survived the disaster. Seeing how everything is going makes me think that the utility may end up being much more important than the commercial suggests.

    It’s still not clear how quickly people will notice a difference in their daily lives. The rollout depends a lot on how quickly V2 is deployed, how well carriers work together, and how quickly regulators approve the plan. But it’s pretty clear where to go. As a piece of physical infrastructure, the cell tower on a hillside or rooftop is no longer the only choice. It is now one of several options. A small satellite is moving across the sky with its antenna pointed down, ready for your phone to need it.
