The modular smartphone was laid to rest in the right way. The service was run by Motorola. When the Moto Z line first came out in 2016, it had big plans: you could add a speaker here, a camera there, or a battery pack whenever you needed one. For a moment, it seemed like the future of cell phone hardware would be something you could change by hand. Then it didn’t work out in a quiet way. Most buyers thought the modules were just a gimmick. Not even close. The ecosystem never got big enough to matter. By the early 2020s, the idea had been thrown out completely, and the business had moved on to foldables and glass slabs that were stronger and stronger. Modular phones were no longer important.
When Tecno came out with something called Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology, our first thought was that it might not work. That’s okay. The company often takes big risks with concept hardware. Last year, it was a tri-foldable, and not all of those risks end up in stores. It’s not like that, though, and you should pay attention to it before writing it off as just another flashy trade show prop.
The base phone is only 4.9 mm thick. It takes 4.5 mm to snap on the modular power bank to the back. When put together, they’re still about the same thickness as a regular flagship smartphone. It’s not as important as it seems that little thing. One of the main complaints about the first modular phones was that when you attached something, the whole point of modularity was lost—your sleek phone felt like a brick with attachments bolted to it. Tecno seems to have really thought about this issue, not just admitted that it existed.
The attachment system is powered by pogo pins and magnetic connections. Data is sent wirelessly via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or 5G mmWave. It is said that snapping on a module pairs almost instantly. This is the kind of detail that makes a real product different from an idea that only works in a controlled demo setting. This ecosystem is going to have about ten modules, such as a power bank, an action camera, and a telephoto lens that can work as a separate camera system by using the phone’s screen as a low-latency viewfinder.

It seems like Tecno is also aware that this isn’t as relevant to the people who used to use it. Motorola’s pitch for modular phones back then was mostly about how useful they were—more battery life, better speakers, etc. This time, things are different. AI workloads, camera performance, and processing needs are all going up quickly, and phone makers are running out of stylish ways to add more features to the same body without making it thicker. Moduls could help with that issue, at least in theory. Put what you need on the device when you need it, and leave the rest of the device lean.
The idea comes in two different design versions. The ATOM edition is pretty clean, with silver aluminum and small red details. It looks like the MODA edition is more about the person using it, for those who want their hardware to say something about them. Both have glass backs with modular alignment zones that help accessories fit. This may seem like a small thing, but it probably makes the tactile experience a lot easier than it would be otherwise.
It’s just an idea. At MWC 2026 in Barcelona, Tecno will show it off at Hall 7, Stand 7A40. There is no confirmed release date or price for the product, and there is no guarantee that the ecosystem will grow beyond the ten modules that are currently described. There are real doubts about that. The history of modular hardware shows that there is a huge gap between a prototype that works and a product that people actually buy. This gap is made up of problems with manufacturing, problems with developers adopting new technologies, and consumer habits that are harder to change than anyone thinks.
It’s still hard not to notice that this time the idea is better. It is thinner, pairs faster, and was made to meet a need for expandable performance that didn’t exist as much ten years ago. Another question is whether Tecno can get this from Barcelona to a shelf. However, it looks like the modular smartphone isn’t dead after all.
