Honor had a treadmill set up in its booth at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. One worker walked on it while using a regular phone to record video. The video was a shaky mess. It looked like Honor hadn’t moved at all in the video after someone did the same thing to her Robot Phone. That thought stuck. The demo was very basic, but it got the point across better than any specs sheet.
This is the Honor Robot Phone, an Android smartphone that has a robotic camera arm built right into the back of it. Built in, not clipped on or added after the fact. Honor made a micromotor just for this purpose that lets the camera come out of an internal housing. It twists out and locks into place. When not in use, a small window slides over it. The sound is almost too delicate, and when you look at it closely, your first thought is to worry about what will happen if you drop it. Honor’s representatives say the mechanism is stronger than it seems. Perhaps. It’s still the kind of claim that needs to be tested in the real world.
It’s not just that the camera moves; it’s how much it moves and thinks that makes it robotic. The gimbal has four degrees of freedom on three axes and can pan all the way around 360 degrees. So you don’t have to physically flip the phone to take selfies or regular pictures. It can face forward or backward. Honor calls the AI tracking layer “AI Object Tracking.” It keeps track of subjects even when they are out of frame. During demonstrations, two dancers did routines while the camera followed them around and tilted sometimes to make it look more cinematic, like a trained camera operator might tilt naturally. It’s another matter to see if that instinct will hold up outside of a controlled demo setting.
You can also talk to the camera and tell it what to do, and it can do this in real time. At one station, people spoke to the camera, which commented on a man’s suit, saw a crowd forming nearby, and changed its framing to fit. It can shake its head or nod. It can move to music. These new features might seem like a waste of time at the moment, but there is a strong engineering case for why multimodal input, which combines voice, motion, and visual context, is a better way to control a camera than touching a glass screen.

There is a 200-megapixel sensor inside the camera. After that, details are hard to come by. No one knows what size sensor it is. The manufacturer has not been named. It’s not clear what the other rear cameras are for; they probably had to be redesigned to fit the robotic housing. Even when it comes to still photography, Honor hasn’t said much. This is a big problem because a lot of smartphone photography is still just one frame. There has been no talk about burst shooting, portrait mode, or interval photography yet. You could say that the company isn’t ready to talk about it yet, or those use cases might not be fully solved.
Honor’s partnership with Arri, an Austrian company that makes movie cameras, adds an interesting twist to this. It is known in professional filmmaking that Arri’s color science is good, and this partnership suggests that Honor is trying to reach a certain type of user—one who cares a lot about how footage looks, not just how steady it is. It’s still not clear how that partnership will work in practice or what Arri will actually add to the final product. Both businesses aren’t saying much about the specifics.
Honor’s Robot Phone is part of its larger Alpha Plan, a $10 billion, five-year effort to build its brand around hardware that uses AI. There isn’t much room for differentiation in that market, so that’s a huge bet. Whether the built-in robotic gimbal is the feature that creates a whole new category of devices or just the riskiest camera experiment of 2026 will likely depend on how well the final version works when it finally hits stores, starting in China later this year.
